Anthonie Waterloo hardly made any oil paintings, and specialised almost entirely in making works on paper (both drawings and prints). His drawings include some of the most technically original landscapes of his time, in particular the small group of works to which this fine example belongs. Here, the artist employs a highly unusual combination of watercolour, gouache, oiled charcoal and coloured chalks, to create an extremely atmospheric effect that seems almost to anticipate the works of the French impressionists, created more than 200 years later. These fascinating coloured drawings by Waterloo are mostly in the collections of major European museums, and hardly ever appear on the market.
