John Martin

Containing many of the themes and motifs that would preoccupy Martin throughout his career, this beautifully preserved watercolour dates to circa 1810-11, about five years after the young painter had arrived in London from his native Northumberland. In 1811 he was to exhibit his first work at the Royal Academy.
