This vibrant alabaster relief comprises the lower part of a Crucifixion panel which was originally mounted in a carved altarpiece. An angel is depicted to the foot of the cross, receiving Christ’s blood. The Virgin stands to the left hand side, clasping her hands, together with the other two Mary’s (Magdalene and Cleophas). Longinus stands to the right hand side of the scene, with a scroll touching his proper left hand which rises to Christ’s feet, and with a soldier depicted above his proper right shoulder. The compositional scheme of the relief compares closely to several late 15th century alabaster sculpture produced in Nottingham, illustrated in Francis Cheetham’s publication on English Medieval Alabasters (op. cit.), including a panel in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (inv. no. A.105-1946).
