framed:  37 ½ by 31 ½in.; 95.2 by 80 cm.

This portrait relates to a lost original by Jean Louis Voille (1744–1804), painted in the last years of the eighteenth century. Paul, the only son of Catherine the Great and Peter III, became Emperor of Russia in 1797 and Grand Master of the Order of Malta in 1798. Here he wears that Order around his neck along with the stars of the Orders of St. Andrew and St. Alexander Nevskii on his chest. Other versions of the same portrait after Voille's lost original are today in the Royal Collection, UK,1 the Museum of the Order of St. John2,and a version by Stepan Semyonovich Shchukin after Voille in the State Russia Museum, St. Petersburg.
