E. Kahng and M. Roland Michel, Anne Vallayer-Coster: Painter to the Court of Marie-Antoinette, exhibition catalogue, New Haven 2002, cat. no. 93, p. 212, reproduced in reverse.

A rare and successful female artist, Vallayer-Coster was reçu into the Academie Royale in 1770 and exhibited at the Salon for the first time the following year. Her oeuvre consists mostly of still lifes, and unlike a number of other artists who were associated with the Royal Court, she was able to successfully continue her career through the Revolution and beyond. Indeed, the present still life is dated to year 9 of the French Republican calendar, or 1805.

A pendant to the painting, in which a similarly-composed bouquet of flowers are displayed in a wide blue vase, is in a private collection.1
