Leopold von Stoll was an artist originally from Holland, who devoted his career to painting floral and fruit still lifes. He worked in Krakow and Warsaw in about 1828, when the present picture was executed, before travelling to Saint Petersburg in 1830, where he painted floral compositions relating to the Botanical Garden there. He arrived in Austria in 1834, where he spent the majority of the rest of his working life.
