The striking composition of this painting gives prominence to a group of rocks rising up in the foreground and a horizontal chain of mountains in the background, creating a panoramic view towards the horizon. This work attests to Calame’s masterly abilities in the depiction of mountain landscapes. It recalls a series of paintings Alexandre Calame painted of Monte Rosa (Switzerland), executed in 1843–1844.
