This handsome table is an almost literal copy of the design for a 'Sideboard Table' that appears as Plate XXXVIII in the 1st Edition (1754) and Plate LIX in the 3rd Edition (1762) of Thomas Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, the original drawing for which is in the Metropolitan Museum, New York (20.40.2(42)). The pierced fretwork of the frieze and legs and central scroll-carved cartouche aptly characterise the synthesis of Rococo, Chinese and Gothic elements in Chippendale's mature style.
