Description
A Chamberlain Worcester Salmon Pink-Ground Vase and Cover, Circa 1816
of 'Regent' shape with ram's head handles and a pineapple finial picked out in gold, raised on a square foot, the front painted with a scene of Adriana, Antipholus of Syracuse and the servant Dromio, from Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors, reserved on a salmon pink-ground enriched with caillouté-gilding, the shoulder and foot with gilt-anthemion, the cover inscribed in red:
'COMEDY OF ERRORS/
Adr[iana] Come, sir, to dinner: Dromio, keep the [gate.]/
Husband, I'll dine above with you to day/
And shrive you of a thousand idle pranks/
Act II. Sc.2',

A vase forming the pair to the present vase, but painted with a scene from The Taming of the Shrew, is in the Museum of Royal Worcester, Worcester, illustrated in Geoffrey Godden, Chamberlain-Worcester Porcelain 1788-1852 (London 1982), p. 296, pl. 385. Godden notes that "A vase of this type with The Taming of the Shrew panel, painted by Walter Chamberlain, was invoiced at 8 guineas in December 1813." A larger example, 10 1/2 in. high painted with a scene from Henry VIII, Act III, scene 1, is illustrated in Godden, ibid., colour pl. VIII, p. 102, pl. 105, the reverse showing the arms of Lord Nevill, who ordered it along with several other wares from Chamberlain's in June 1813.
