Description
Pyrite on Matrix
Navajún, La Rioja, Spain
5½ x 3¾ x 2½ inches (14 x 9.5 x 6.4 cm). Largest cubic pyrite crystal measures 1⅝ inches (4.13 cm) on each edge. 9 inches (22.9 cm) on custom metal stand inserted into bottom of matrix. 4 pounds (1.8 kg).
Although it has often been called "fool's gold" since the early 19th century, pyrite is in fact highly coveted by collectors who prize its complex and lustrous cubic crystals that can form alone and in association with other minerals. The famous pyrite deposits of Navajún — from which this specimen originates — have been worked since at least 300 B.C.E., when the local inhabitants prized the perfect golden cubes for their purported mystical powers.
