Two Groups of a Boar Hunt
white porcelain
20.2cm., 8in. and 14cm., 5½in.
Alessandro Biancalana begins his discussion of the porcelain caccine (hunting groups) produced by the Ginori manufactory at Doccia by illustrating the Boar Hunt from Giovanni Pratesi’s collection presented in this sale, one in bronze (see lot 94), and the smaller version of the present lot in white porcelain (both published in op. cit., p. 88).
Biancalana stresses that the caccine appear already at an early stage of the Doccia production, in the late 1740s, as an independent small group of sculpture and decoration. He identifies the source in the small bronzes by Giovan Francesco Susini.
Other examples were sold in the John Winter sale at Sotheby’s London, 10 December 2015 (lot 61), and at Sotheby’s Milan, 16 December 2003 (lot 127), while a third example is in the Cagnola Collection, Gazzada, Varese.
