The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 25572 was introduced in 1983. Its 36mm diameter places it in the lineage of the time only 4100 (1977), 4332 (introduced 1983 too), which will continue with the 25594 the following year as well as the 14790 in 1992. This diameter has been a highly popular success from its beginning as it sits perfectly both on smaller and larger wrists.

The 25572 is nicknamed “The Owl” by collectors. This comes from its two “big eyes” subsidiary dials indicating the date and the day. The model was an important step in the history of the Royal Oak as it was for the first time both indicating the day in addition to the date and the first Royal Oak reference with subsidiary dials. It paved the way to many other models, such as the 25594, which has an additional moon-phase indication and, of course, the 25554 featuring a perpetual calendar.

The 25572 is a rare bird and rarely comes up at auction. The model was produced in stainless steel, steel and gold and full gold, as the present lot.
