The Rolex Submariner has been a cornerstone of the Rolex catalog since 1954. The present example is a reference 5513 which is the longest running reference in the Submariner’s history. From 1962 to 1989 the reference 5513 saw substantial changes – but Hammer’s example, which dates to 1966, is one of the earlier gilt dial variants. Gilt dials were produced by allowing the brass dial plate to show through making the text appear a golden color. They are prized for the deep black luster and color. Like many watches in Hammer’s collection, this watch has aged uniquely where the lume on the dial and hands is showing it’s age, as well as the lume pip in the bezel. Fitted to a period Oyster Rivet bracelet, this is an excellent candidate for everyday wear.
