Lot Details

Description

Designed as five graduated stars set with cushion-shaped diamonds and decorated with blue enamel, to a late 19th century foliate frame set with brilliant-cut diamonds, inner circumference approximately 470mm.

From the 1860s onwards stars became a favored design motif in 19th century jewellery. The motif's rise in popularity coincided with the publication of 'From the Earth to the Moon' by Jules Verne, which tells the story of a group of weapon enthusiasts who try to create a gun powerful enough to transport three people to space. The star also played a role in Victorian symbolic language, representing direction and guidance for the spirit.
