German, 17th century
A heart-shaped amuletic pendant
rock crystal, in a metal mount
together with a smaller patinated metal mounted rock crystal pendant, on modern stands
5cm., 2in. and 3cm., 1¼in.
Amuletic pendants of this type were popular from the late 15th right up to the 18th century in Europe and were mounted with various hardstones such as agate and rock crystal. It was believed that rock crystal has strong therapeutic powers and would protect the wearer from the Evil Eye.
