Born in Germany, Adolf von Meckel spent part of his childhood with his maternal grandparents in St Petersburg. When he returned to the country of his birth, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, where he attended the courses given by Hans Fredrik Gude. In 1880, Von Meckel set out with the artists Bracht and Schirm on an initial journey across Egypt and Palestine, later travelling to Algeria and Tunisia.

Dated 1889, our watercolour shows a young north African dog handler whose form stands out against the doors of a building distinctive for its oriental architecture. Works with Orientalist subjects were very popular with the public: when the artist died prematurely at the age of thirty-seven, several posthumous exhibitions of his work took place the following year, notably in Dresden and Munich.

Né en Allemagne, Adolf von Meckel passe une partie de son enfance auprès de ses grands-parents maternels, à Saint-Pétersbourg. De retour dans son pays natal, il étudie à l'Académie des Beaux-Arts de Karlsruhe où il suit les cours de Hans Fredrik Gude. En 1880, Von Meckel part avec les artistes Bracht et Schirm et réalise avec eux un premier voyage à travers l’Egypte et la Palestine, avant de repartir plus tard pour l’Algérie et la Tunisie.

Datée en 1889, notre aquarelle représente un jeune maître-chien maure dont la silhouette se détache des portes d’un bâtiment à l’architecture orientale. Les œuvres aux sujets orientalistes rencontrent un franc succès auprès du public ; mort prématurément à l’âge de 37 ans, l’artiste se verra consacrer l’année suivante plusieurs expositions posthumes notamment à Dresde et à Munich.
