This charming pastel is a perfect example of the talent for portraiture that brought success to Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer until his dying day. He became known for Symbolist works tinged with an Art Nouveau aesthetic and was much admired by Symbolist critics: Joséphin Péladan even wanted him to join one of his Rose+Croix salons, but he preferred to exhibit at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and at the Société des Pastellistes Français. Equally popular with the wider public, he received many commissions for portraits – he had already demonstrated his talent in this field with the famous portrait of his friend, the Belgian poet Georges Rodenbach.
In this portrait of a young boy, his inimitable style and his irreproachable pastel technique are immediately recognizable. Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer displays all his talent here, expressing his unique qualities, especially in the abstract treatment of the background, with great freedom and a clear taste for lyricism.
