Given to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts by S. Richard Fuller in 1927 (in memory of his wife Lucy Derby Fuller), this painting was attributed in 1843 to the German painter Daniel Chodowiecki, an attribution that is difficult to support and was in fact contested by Eunice Williams in 1982. She proposed, more convincingly, that the painting was by Jacques-Sébastien Leclerc, known as Leclerc des Gobelins (1733-1785).

The painting was subsequently sold by the museum as ‘by a follower’, through the intermediary of Sotheby’s New York, on 11 October 1990 (lot 4). The quality of this work, which is entirely creditable, seems to us to be very close to authenticated works by the artist.

Donnée au Boston Museum of Fine Arts par S. Richard Fuller en 1927 (en mémoire de sa femme Lucy Derby Fuller), le tableau fut attribué en 1843 au peintre allemand Daniel Chodowiecki, une attribution difficile à maintenir et qui fut justement contestée par Eunice Williams en 1982. Celle-ci considérait, de manière plus convaincante, le tableau comme de Jacques-Sébastien Leclerc, dit Leclerc des Gobelins (1733-1785).

C’est en tant que « Suiveur » de cet artiste que ce tableau était par la suite vendu par le musée par l’intermédiaire de Sotheby’s New York, le 11 octobre 1990 (lot 4). La qualité de cette œuvre, tout-à-fait honorable, nous paraît par ailleurs très proche de celles d’autres œuvres sûres de l’artiste.
