A large Dutch engraved armorial glass 'Seven United Provinces' goblet and cover, circa 1730-50
the generous round funnel bowl engraved with the crowned coats of arms above pendant swags, supported by a hollow knopped stem on a domed and folded foot, the cover engraved with a band of fruiting laurels, 40cm. high; together with a Dutch engraved allegorical glass goblet and cover, 18th century, engraved with Hansje in de Kelder (Jack in the Cellar) below the inscription VIVAT HANSYE IN DE KELDER, 26cm. high
On loan from the Stilte-Stichting Landgoed Den Bosch Collection to the Museum Arnhem from February 2004 until recently.

Ritsema van Eck, Glass in the Rijksmuseum, 1995, Vol. 2, p. 222, no. 240 for an armorial glass engraved by a similar hand; and pp. 339-40, nos. 393-396 for glasses engraved with Jack in the Cellar. Glasses with this euphemistic phrase refers to an impending birth and wishes long life to the unborn child; it may have been a discreet way for a host to announce the imminent birth to guests.
