A Dutch-engraved allegorical wine glass, circa 1760


the funnel bowl engraved, perhaps by Jakob Sang, with a woman examining her nightgown for fleas in candlelight within an oval cartouche, the reverse finely inscribed: DE VLOOŸE STEEKE FEL DAAR DOOR KAN IK NIET SLAAPEN / HAD IK EEN FRIS GESEL BŸ MŸN OM VREUGHT TE RAAPEN / DAN WAAR MŸN HERT GERUST K SOU OM GEEN VLOOŸE DENKE / MAAR HEM DOOR MINNE LUST MŸN MAAGDE ROOSIE SCHENKE, 18cm. high

 

together with:

-a light baluster glass engraved with a vignette of a three-masted ship flying the Dutch flag, 16cm. high;

-a 'Liberty' goblet engraved with a galloping horse below the inscription AUREA LIBERTAS (Golden Liberty), 18cm. high;

-and another wine glass of drawn trumpet form, engraved with a mating cockerel and hen below the inscription DAT KOMT DAAR VAN (THAT'S WHERE IT COMES FROM), 16cm. high

On loan from the Stilte-Stichting Landgoed Den Bosch Collection to the Museum Arnhem from February 2004 until recently.
