The illustration atop this gold box portrays the moment when St. Matthew the Apostle is visited by an Angel, who inspires him to write his gospel, the Book of Matthew. This important biblical subject was reproduced in a variety of European paintings, most famously by the Italian master Caravaggio in 1602.
