the cover enameled en plein with St. Matthew on translucent blue enamel ground over rayed engine-turning, the rim set with split pearls, the sides and base with matching blue enamel within a border of formal foliage and white lines, marked inside base and cover LG crowned incuse

The illustration atop this gold box portrays the moment when St. Matthew the Apostle is visited by an Angel, who inspires him to write his gospel, the Book of Matthew. This important biblical subject was reproduced in a variety of European paintings, most famously by the Italian master Caravaggio in 1602.
