A Regency Gilt and Lacquered Brass Eight-Light Chandelier, Attributed to William Collins, Circa 1820-1830

William Collins of 227 Strand, is the most likely maker of this impressive chandelier. He was a leading supplier of gilt-bronze and brass light fittings whose most significant commission was for the 3rd Duke of Northumberland's London home, Northumberland House which included two magnificent chandeliers, later adapted into vases (sold Christie's London, 14 June 2001, lot 105) and at least two pairs of large candelabra, one pair that is now at Syon Park, Middlesex and a pair of monumental candelabra now at The Bowes Museum, County Durham, supplied in 1823. These were commissioned for the first floor parade rooms at Northumberland House in London. They exhibit the same exuberant use of neoclassical motifs such a boldly scrolled acanthus and palmettes and also feature gadrooned 'wells'.
