Description
Sebastián de Alvarado y Alvear [i.e. Sebastián de Matienzo]
Heroyda ovidiana Dido a Eneas con parafrasis española, y morales reparos ilustrada. Bordeaux: Guillaume Millanges for Bartolomé Paris, 1628
4to (204 x 140mm.), woodcut device on title-page, woodcut initials and headpieces, woodcut cartouche on â2v, later half marbled calf over marbled boards, flat spine with red morocco lettering-piece, lacking final 3 leaves containing index, cut close at head with some headlines shaved or cropped, occasional light browning or staining, final leaf slightly damaged, binding slightly rubbed
It is now considered that the author of this commentary on the Dido section of Ovid's Heroides was Sebastian de Matienzo (1588-1644), a Jesuit scholar in Pamplona. The tract contains numerous quotations from contemporary Spanish authors such as Luis de Góngora and Lope de Vega.
