Signed by the author: "from Arthur Conan Doyle, Xmas 1922". A “Mrs. English” has appended her name.


Doyle attempted to enlist in the army following the outbreak of war with Germany: "I am fifty-five but I am very strong and hardy, and can make my voice audible at great distances, which is useful at drill." His offer to serve was declined but his lobbying of the War Office was efficacious in the introduction of life-jackets for sailors and body-armour for soldiers.
