of shallow rounded form, painted in underglaze cobalt blue, green and relief red outlined in black, decorated with a cypress tree flanked by sprays of hyacinths and carnations, the bracketed rim with paired tulips alternating with cintamani patterns, paired tulips and rosettes on underside, marked 'AMM 64'

In the Islamic world, the cypress tree symbolises the afterlife and spiritual elevation. It appeared on Iznik ceramics around 1520 and became a popular motif from the 1560s. A dish in the Louvre, Paris (inv. no.AD 32668), presents a similar central composition, and another in the Musée national de la Renaissance, Ecouen (inv. no.ECL8467) shows a different floral arrangement around a cypress tree, within a closely related border. Two other similar examples are in the Victoria & Albert Museum (inv. no.275-1873) and the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon (inv.843).
A jug in the Sadberk Hanim Museum (inv. no.SHM 9056-P.290) is decorated with the same cintamani pattern within blue grenade-shaped medallions and interspersed with paired tulips that adorn the present piece's border.
