Eva LeWitt’s (b. 1985, Spoleto, Italy) sculptures and installations are fabricated as much from space, light, and architecture as they are from the multitude of hand-altered commercial materials she employs. Mesh, silicone, sponges, and other quotidian store-bought elements are carefully dyed, cast, or stained, and are subsequently imbued with a softness and imperfection that was not present in their original mass-produced state. The monumental scale of her installations contrasts with the simplicity of form in each individual element. This is one of many paradigms in which LeWitt’s work straddles oppositions: vibrant yet reticent, pliable yet sharp, formally sophisticated yet charmingly imprecise. Her work employs minimalism and geometry in a streamlined language of abstraction, which is nevertheless suffused with joy, warmth, and alluring animation.
LeWitt’s first solo exhibition with Luhring Augustine was held in the Chelsea space in April 2022. Other recent exhibitions of her work have been presented at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA; the Jewish Museum, New York, NY; the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Ridgefield, CT; and the Clark Institute at Williams College, Williamstown, MA. In June 2024, Eva has a solo exhibition opening at the Joslyn Art Museum, Omaha, NE, and she recently unveiled a major permanent site-specific installation at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH. A large-scale commissioned installation of her work is currently on view at the New Britain Museum of American Art, CT through November 2023. LeWitt was also recently commissioned to design the sets for a Justin Peck ballet, Partita, performed by the NYC Ballet Company, which opened their season in January 2022. LeWitt’s work is in the collection of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C. and Kistefos Museum, Jevnaker, Norway, among others. She currently lives and works in New York City.
