This fine marble sculpture is carved after the ancient marble, Apollino, also known as the Little Apollo, or Medici Apollo, which is now in the illustrious Tribuna of the Uffizi, Florence. First recorded in the Villa Medici in Rome in 1704, the Apollino marble was copied by leading sculptors and often paired with the Venus de Medici.
