white marble
153.5cm., 60 1/2in.
Jacob Lundberg was a student of the celebrated Swedish neoclassical sculptor Johan Niclas Byström (1783-1848), who was himself trained by Johan Tobias Sergel (1740-1814), before moving to Rome in 1810. According to the inscription on the present marble, the composition was created by Byström but the present marble executed by Lundberg in 1850 (after his masters death). The model shows the influence of the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1740-1840) whilst also recalling the famous Baigneuse by Etienne Maurice Falconet (1716-1791) in the musée du Louvre (inv. no. MR 1846). The present marble is impressive in scale and beautifully carved. Works by both Byström and Lundberg can be found in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm; see, for example, the latter's Girl carrying grapes with similar composition (inv. no. NMSk 868).
