Printemps (Spring)
signed: A. FRILLI
white marble
160cm., 63in.
Antonio Frilli founded his eponymous gallery in Florence in 1860 and specialised in producing decorative works for the international market. He was one of many Italian artists of the 19th century who executed copies after Ancient, Renaissance and Neoclassical compositions, but also invented original works including this monumental marble of a woman capturing the essence of Spring. The figure wears a beautifully draped robe and is adorned with flowers, alluding to the season of renewal and rebirth.
