Born in Ahmedabad in 1925, Balkrishna Patel studied under the prestigious tutelage of Ravishanker Rawal and later with N.S. Bendre at Maharaja Sayajirao University in Baroda. Patel is economic and astute with shape, line, and color, revealing beauty through simple forms. Patel was a member of Group 1890, formed in 1962, which contributed to a form of indigenous modernism and offered a fresh perspective to the aesthetics of modernist India. The present lot showcases Patel’s unique and truly pioneering visual language that stood against the cosmopolitan aesthetic in Bombay. The painting reveals a modernist rendering of Tantric geometry and patterns, created by a thoughtful and incisive artist.
