The Property of a European Collector
A shinomi-nari kabuto [high conical helmet]
Edo period, 17th century
the six-plate patinated russet iron bowl of tall conical form and raised ridges, terminating in a four-stage russet iron and copper tehen kanamono floret, with raised iron igaki [small metal plates to the base], the mabisashi [peak] with a form of aoi mon [leaves of wild ginger crest], the leaves pointing outwards, nawamefukurin [ornamental border with rope impression], black lacquer fukigashi [turnbacks], three-tiered black lacquer shikoro [neck guard] with sugake odoshi [spaced lacing] in dark blue braid
The bowl to peak: 26 cm., 10¼ in.
The shikoro to peak: 34.2 cm., 13½ in.
