A momonari kabuto [peach-shaped helmet]

Edo period, 17th - 18th century 


the two-plate black lacquered iron bowl of momonari [peach-shaped] form with a central raised ridge, the mabisashi [peak] with hammered brow, the fukigaeshi [turnbacks] with hinomaru ogi mon [fan with sun disc crests], the four-tiered leather on iron shikoro [neck guard] with sugake odoshi [spaced lacing] in dark blue braid, gold lacquered sun disc maedate [forecrest], black and gold lacquered wakidate [side crests] in the form of ox horns, with helmet box and two fitted covers for the wakidate, probably 19th century


The bowl to peak: 23.6 cm., 9⅜ in.

The shikoro to peak: 32 cm., 12⅝ in.
