A fine kawari kabuto [unusually shaped helmet]
Edo period, 17th century
the three-plate gold and black lacquered iron bowl of tall, eboshi-nari [court-cap shaped] form, decorated overall in tataki-nuri, the black lacquered mabisashi [peak] with Buddhist tennin n gold hiramaki-e and keuchi, the small fukigaeshi [turnbacks] with circle crests, silvered copper fukurin [ornamental border] six-tiered black lacquer shikoro [neck guard] with kebiki odoshi [close-spaced lacing] in blue and red braid, the gold lacquered maedate [forecresrt] in the form of a stylised crescent moon, the gold and black lacquered tataki-nuriwakidate [lateral crests] in the form of crab pincers
The bowl to peak: 31.5 x 12½ in.
The shikoro to peak: 39 cm., 15½ in.
