the five-plate iron bowl of zunari [head-shaped] form, modeled to the crown with additional iron plates modelled as a stylised sosho-zukin [priest's hood], decorated overall in black lacquer, the mabisashi [peak] with hammered brow, small black lacquer fukigaeshi [turnbacks], the four-tiered black lacquer itamono hineno jikoro [close fitted neck guard with solid plates] with kebiki odoshi [close-spaced lacing] in dark blue braid

The bowl to peak: 24.5 cm., 9⅝ in. 

The shikoro to peak: 32.5 cm., 12¾ in. 

Accompanied by a certificate of registration Tokubetsu Kicho Shiryo [Especially Important Object], no. 1299 issued by the Nihon Katchu Bugu Kenkyu Hozon-kai [The Association for the Research and Preservation of Japanese Helmets and Armour], dated Reiwa 3 (2021)

This rare kawari kabuto has some restoration to the black lacquer overall, as can be seen in the illustrations there is some cracking to the lacquer, small fissures, and minor chips at the rims, the neck guard has some old repairs particularly to the reverse, the turnbacks re-lacquered.
