A honkozane do-maru gusoku [armour] 

Edo period, 18th century


the fine sixteen-plate iron bowl with large standing rivets, four plates gilt, chased and engraved with scrolling foliage and applied with shinodare [ornamental strips], terminating in a five-stage copper-gilt tehen kanamono of typical chrysanthemum form, stenciled leather mabisashi [peak], the large fukigaeshi [turnbacks] similarly decorated and applied with copper-gilt chrysanthemum roundels, nawame fukurin [ornamental border with impressed rope], four-tiered black lacquer manju-jikoro [rounded neck guard] with kebiki odoshi [close-spaced lacing] in blue braid, gilt metal maedate [forecrest] in the form of a maru ni katabami mon [encirled wood sorrel crest], gilt metal kuwagata [stylised horns] on an ornate kuwagata-dai fixture pierced, chased and engraved with further chrysanthemums in relief among foliage, the black lacquered iron tengu men [face mask in the form of a supernatural being] forged with elongated nose and open mouth, rivetted nose plate, pierced to the ears with inome [boar's eye], red lacquer interior, two-tiered yodaregake [throat protector] laced in matching braid, the maru-do [cuirass that wraps around the body without hinges] comrpised of black lacquered honkozane [true lamellae] laced in matching braid, stenciled leather to the muna-ita [upper section of the cuirass], the fine kanagu [fittings] all pierced, chased and engraved with further chrysanthemum heads before floral scrolls, stenciled leather gyoyo [shoulder strap covers] applied with copper-gilt peonies, six-tiered osode [large shoulder guards], chainmail kote [sleeves] with silk brocade lining, seven tassets of five-tiered kusazuri [skirt], bakama haidate [thigh guards] in black lacquer and lined with silk brocade, tsutsu-form suneate [shin guards], with an armour display stand and armour stroage box 


Accompanied by a certificate of registration as Juyo Bunka Shiryo [Important Cultural Material], no. 395 issued by the Nihon Katchu Bugu Kenkyu Hozon Kai [Society for the Preservation of Japanese Armour], dated Heisei 4 (1992).


Mounted on the armour storage box: approx. 150 cm., 59 in. high (excluding the helmet fittings)
