A fine so-fukurin suji-bachi [helmet with raised ridges]
Edo period, 18th century
the fine black lacquered sixteen plate iron bowl with raised ridges and central shinodare [ornamental strip], terminating in a five-stage copper-gilt tehen kanamono, fitted with a copper so-fukurin [ornamental border] and igaki [small metal plates to the base] pierced with inome [boar's eye] openings, plain black lacquer mabisashi [peak], the fukigaeshi [turnbacks] similarly decorated and applied with silver and copper-gilt takanoha mon [falcon feather crests], four-tiered black lacquer itamono hineno-jikoro [solid plate close-fitted neck guard] with kebiki odoshi [close-spaced lacing] in dark blue braid, the copper-gilt maedate-dai [forecrest fixture] chased and engraved with scrolling foliage in European manner on a nanako ground
The bowl to peak: 27.5 cm., 10⅞ in.
The shikoro to peak: 33 cm., 13 in.
Accompanied by a certificate of registration Tokubetsu Kicho Shiryo [Especially Important Object], no. 1491 issued by the Nihon Katchu Bugu Kenkyu Hozon-kai [The Association for the Research and Preservation of Japanese Helmets and Armour], dated Heisei 19 (2007).
