John Bagnold Burgess came from a family of successful artists. He trained at Mr Leigh's Academy in Newman Street in 1848 and under the miniature painter William Charles Ross. Burgess exhibited Spanish and Moorish subjects and works for the years 1872-1879 include titles such as Feliciana - A Spanish Gipsy, Licensing the Beggards: Spain, The Rush for Water: Scene during the Ramadan in Morocco, The  Presentation: English Ladies Visiting a Moor's House and Childhood in Eastern Life.
