signed Benj. Constant lower left
oil on canvas
Unframed: 79.5 by 47.5cm., 31¼ by 18¾in.
Framed: 115 by 83.5cm., 45¼ by 33in.
The canvas has been lined and is providing a strong and stable support to the paint surface. There is a pattern of craquelure visible and some minor surface dirt, otherwise the work is ready to hang. Examination under ultra-violet light reveals retouching to the upper and lower framing edges, a small area of retouching above the figure's head, some flecks to the sky and in a few places elsewhere, as well as infilling to some of the aforementioned craquelure. There is also a spot of retouching to his hand on the left.
