The canvas is not lined and slightly loose on its stretcher. The paint surface reads well under a fairly clean varnish. There is pigment separation throughout, as is usual for a painting of this age, most prominently in the bottom left quadrant and the foreground group of four figures. Under UV light, small areas of retouching in the dresses of the three women left of center; varnish fluoresces green.
