Beverly by the Sea

signed A.T. Bricher and dated 1878 (lower left)

oil on canvas

25 1/4 by 50 1/2 in.

64.1 by 128.3 cm.

Executed in 1878.

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc., an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's:

This work on canvas is restored and should be hung in its current state. The canvas has been lined using Beva-371 as an adhesive. The lining is properly stabilizing the paint layer while not impacting the original texture of the paint. Some cracking in the sky has received retouches, which are visible when the work is viewed under ultraviolet light. These retouches become slightly more focused in the upper right. Retouches can be seen around and within the building and the top of the hill on the left side. These retouches around the building seem to be focused on some weakness and loss caused perhaps by the artist changing his mind and repositioning the building. Otherwise, there are just a few retouches to some isolated cracks in the foreground. All of these retouches are very well applied. The work looks well and should be hung as is.
