In 1878, construction began on a studio in the gardens of the private residence of Dr Blanche in the Rue des Fontis in Auteuil, where the family had moved in 1873. Blanche never lived in his parents’ villa, preferring to combine the studio with his sitting room.

This painting and RM 403 show the same corner of the sitting room. They are unsigned – we think the paintings were intended for his private collection. The Rehearsal by Degas can be seen in the centre of the display (Burrell Collection, Glasgow, inv. 35. 246) along with other paintings that had belonged to his father. The armchairs covered with yellow velvet, the chintz cushions and the Chinese vases can be found in several other paintings by the artist.

En 1878, commence la construction d'un atelier dans le parc de l'hôtel particulier du docteur Blanche rue des Fontis à Auteuil, où la famille avait emménagé en 1873. Blanche n'habitera jamais la villa de ses parents, préférant aménager l'atelier en atelier-salon.

Ce tableau et le RM 403 représentent le même coin de ce salon et ne sont pas signés car nous pensons qu'il s'agit de tableaux destinés à sa collection personnelle. On y voit au centre La Répétition de Degas (Burrell Collection, Glasgow, inv. 35. 246) et d'autres tableaux qui avaient appartenu à son père, ainsi que des fauteuils recouverts de velours jaune, des coussins en chintz et des vases chinois que l'on retrouve dans plusieurs autres tableaux de l'artiste.
