Although he had a very classical training under Albert Zimmermann at the Vienna Academy in the 1860s and his career would mainly, on the face of it, be that of a fairly conventional landscape artist, Rudolf Ribarz often surprises with compositions that have a surprisingly modern quality, radically rejecting contemporary conventions for the genre. This is true of the present painting, with its very high horizon line, and a foreground partly filled by a stand of iris which throws the fishing scene into the middle ground – a mise en scène that Ribarz would repeat in several of the works he painted in the 1870s.

Bien que formé de façon très classique sous l’égide d’Albert Zimmermann à l’Académie de Vienne dans les années 1860, Rudolf Ribarz, dont la carrière sera principalement celle d’un paysagiste a priori assez conventionnel, surprend souvent par des compositions d’une modernité étonnante, qui rompent radicalement avec les conventions contemporaines du genre. C’est le cas ici, avec une ligne d’horizon placée très haut, et un premier plan en partie occulté par un bouquet d’iris qui rejette la scène des pêcheurs au second plan, selon une mise en scène que Ribarz répétera dans plusieurs de ses œuvres des années 1870.
