Isidor Kaufmann's paintings reveal the inner spiritual essence and religious life of the Eastern European Jewry. In 1894, the artist embarked on the first of many trips to Moravia, Upper Hungary, the shtetls of “Russian Poland” and Brova in Galicia, which provided Kaufmann with ample visions of contemporary Jewish life where he was able to observe and record the culture and traditions of the people there. The present work, a consummate example of Kaufmann's delicately rendered images of Jewish people engaged in prayer, demonstrates Kaufmann's adept ability to capture the sitter's piety and religious expression.
