Alex Hay’s career as an artist has encompassed many media, beginning in the 1960s, when he became associated with the experimental performance artists affiliated with Judson Church, including Robert Rauschenberg and Merce Cunningham. After his time as a performance artist, Hay went on to make a name for himself as a painter and sculptor. He remains recognized for his pop-like paper bag sculptures, among other works that played with scale and material, and experimented heavily with the elevation of the mundane objects of daily life.
Exhibitions of Hay’s work have been held at Leo Castelli Gallery, New York; Kornblee Gallery, New York; and Peter Freeman, Inc. among others. Hay’s work is included in the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
