Description

Southern German, probably Ulm, late 15th century

The Virgin and Child enthroned

limewood, with remnants of polychromy

93cm., 36½in.

With Jan Roelofs Antiquairs, Maastricht, 2002;
From whom acquired by the father of the present owners

This beautiful Madonna shows the influence of the Swabian master sculptor Hans Multscher (circa 1400-1467), particularly in her facial features and expression, indicating an origin among Multscher’s followers in Ulm. The composition also relates to works by later sculptors from the Ulm school, such as the Enthroned Madonna attributed to Niklaus Weckmann (1481-1526) in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (inv. no. Kunstkammer, 30).
