This painting is somewhat rare within the œuvre of Christian Berentz in its being dated (1693) - very few of his paintings bear a date, which has led to difficulties in establishing a chronology of his work. The distinctive way in which the pomegranate is split into thirds here is typical of Berentz, and may be found in a number of his other works, such as the large-scale, ambitious composition dated three years later, in the Pinacoteca dei Musei Civici, Pesaro.1
