With her Turkish headdress and exotic costume, this type of sitter has come to represent a fantasy image of an Eastern woman viewed through Westerners' eyes. The rose she holds between her breasts may be a play on words identifying her as Rossa or Rosselana, the favourite wife of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.
