Description

English School, first half of the 16th century

Portrait of a gentleman, bust-length, wearing a green breastplate with gilt festoons

inscribed centre left and right: ANNO DNI / 1547 / AETATIS.SVAE / 32

oil on panel

unframed: 46.8 x 43.2 cm.; 18⅜ x 17 in.

framed: 60.6 x 56.6 cm.; 23⅞ x 22¼ in.

Although the inscription on this panel is contemporary with the painting, the low-necked shirt and wide-brimmed hat are more in keeping with fashion found in earlier portraits, circa 1520 - see, for example, the portrait of King Henry VIII datable to this time, in the National Portrait Gallery, London.1
