by the artist as a soft-ground etching for the Liber Studiorum
In this highly finished drawing, Cotman sits on the river Yare to the east of Norwich. Two men stand knee deep in the water, pulling an upturned boat, while two others relax under the trees.
Cotman was clearly interested in this subject as he produced a soft-ground etching of it for the Liber Studiorum, and a related chalk drawing on grey paper, sold at Sotheby's, New York on 23 January 2022 (lot 62).
