Description
A Way of Life: The Collection of Barbara & Ernest Kafka
Richard Wilson, R.A.
Penegoes, Powys 1713/14 - 1782 Colomendy, Clwyd
A puppy asleep on a chair
Black chalk on laid paper, laid onto an early wash-line mount;
inscribed in pen and brown ink, verso: Wilson
107 by 137 mm
Richard Wilson, long considered the father of British landscape painting, lived in Italy between 1751 and 1757 and it has been suggested that he made this drawing during the early part of his time there (perhaps in 1751 or 1752).
Another black chalk drawing of a dog, which bears a strong resemblance to the present animal, was sold in these Rooms on 5 June 2008 (lot 197).1
We are grateful to Dr Paul Spencer-Longhurst for his help when cataloguing this lot.
