Richard Wilson, long considered the father of British landscape painting, lived in Italy between 1751 and 1757 and it has been suggested that he made this drawing during the early part of his time there (perhaps in 1751 or 1752).


Another black chalk drawing of a dog, which bears a strong resemblance to the present animal, was sold in these Rooms on 5 June 2008 (lot 197).1
